When Do You Need Braces?

Braces are an orthodontic appliance used to fix teeth misalignment or malocclusions such as overcrowding, diastema (gaps), underbite, overbite, crossbite, and openbite.

Fixing these issues will allow optimal teeth functioning and hygiene; improved dental and facial appearance; and at times, clearer speech.

Stainless steel metal brackets are the most common braces in use. Modern versions are fairly compact, light, and comfortable compared to earlier versions. Ceramic braces that are more discreet are also popular.

Braces can be worn at any age but starting early will make the treatment easier. We would ideally like to start preventive and interceptive treatment between the ages of 7-12 years, as the permanent teeth come into place.

We have one of the finest orthodontic practices in Bengaluru that create beautiful smiles and perfect bites.

We are known for fixing smiles for failed and frustrated cases from other clinics.

How Braces Work

Braces consist of metal tubes bonded onto the molars at the back and small brackets bonded to the front of the other teeth. A thin, springy arch wire runs through the brackets and is gently tightened over a period by the orthodontist to guide the teeth into a proper position. The arch wire is fixed to the brackets using elastic or metal ties. This is known as the straight wire technique, which is also the most affordable type of braces.

Self-ligating braces, on the other hand, function without ties. There are several advantages to this technique. Patients need to come in only once in 2 months, and the adjustment process is simpler. Often, improper cleaning around brackets can lead to white lesions and eventually cavities. Since there are no ties in self-ligating braces, dental hygiene is easier. These braces may also help avoid the need for tooth extraction in borderline tooth-crowding cases.

The All-important Retention Phase

Once the braces are fixed, you need to visit the orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks to make adjustments. The treatment period may vary from 6 months to 2 years. During this period, a careful diet and good oral hygiene are crucial. When the braces are finally removed, retainers must be used for a period to hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums and muscles adapt.

Discontinuing retainers too early or improper follow up by dentists can cause a relapse. Such failed cases are very common, and we can help fix them.

Advances in orthodontic technology now offer more aesthetic invisible braces or clear aligners with shortened treatment times.
